The cheongsam goes kiddy for spring

Judging by the kiddy prints abound in the latest CNY collections, it looks to me like going kiddy is the other trend for the spring festival. I see them in the second CNY collection from Our Bitsy Prints (OBP) which was launched last Monday, and the first collection from The Happy Cheongsam (THC) launching this Friday.

In my previous post “More cheongsams abound at the stores” dated 23 December, I featured dresses from Miz Apparels with mostly kiddy prints. I was at the boutique the other day and realized that this trend dominates most of the cheongsams. What is this attraction to prints that are found on baby linens and children clothes? Some may call them whimsical, but it is a fine line between looking whimsy and wierd ala the late Nina Wang (pictured below).

Though in the window display, MA has a new mother-daughter set which is appropriate for both adult and kid.

Back to OBP, this is the biggest collection with 14 adult wear and one for the little girl. Included are two new designs like this red midi dress below.

I think the midi is appropriate for the chubby ladies rather than for the slim physique. It doesn’t drape well on the latter, unless it’s intended as a maternity wear for which it has the length.

Another new design from OBP, and it has the kiddy print of cutesy bears, which I think should be worn on a little girl instead.

The other print, a floral one, is better. But admittedly, the design doesn’t quite appeal to me. I don’t like the vertical band that connects with the hem.

OBP offered two cheongsam tops for this collection. One of then has the cutesy bear print as well. Again, only for those below 12.

Luckily there are something whimsical in the mix, like the halter neck cheongsam in cheery red with buttons print (top), and the lovely flare skirt cheongsam with sheep pattern (bottom).

For the matching mother-daughter set , the designs are rather ordinary in comparison. Sure, the mother dress is not kiddy but it looks boring. As for the little girl dress, it’s not exactly adorable.

The Happy Cheongsam (THC) called its upcoming collection “The Bountiful Harvest”, and followed it to the T. All of the designs have images of food or drinks.

There are two tops available this time, though for the life of me, I can’t see how it is related to the cheongsam. (If you are wondering about the print, that’s mushrooms.)

Below is a new design from THC, which has a school girl-look to it if you ignore the fried eggs. Me think the designer was craving for them when she was working on the dress.

I always have reservation with the gingham pattern, and the below design is made worse with the fruity print on the top. It looks like the dress was converted from a table cloth.

THC offers two mother and daughter sets, as seen below. My preference is for the bottom-most shift dress with whimpsical print of teapots. The little girl dress is rather pretty too.

For the next CNY cheongsam post, I will be featuring some fabulous looking dresses. So stay tune.

    • Hi Susan,
I think MA’s dresses are pretty alright, and they are similar in pricing to The Happy Cheongsam and Lark and Peony, and slightly more expensive than Our Bitsy Prints and Joli Pretty. I recently bought a cheongsam from MA and it is $179. This is half the price of those from Blum, granted the latter uses silk (or made – made silk).
